Will AI be the answer to everything?
That seems to be the suggestion of many valedictorians at U.S. universities this graduation season. However, graduates have not always welcomed the message. At ceremony after ceremony, they responded with boos and jeers.
Her reaction is not difficult to understand. Students are leaving university at a time when AI is being promoted not only as a tool they must learn to use, but also as a force that can transform the job market they will enter. But the challenge goes beyond jobs. Universities are also being encouraged to redesign themselves around AI, adopting it as a solution to budget pressures, administrative burdens and employer demands.
This is where the real danger lies. In the “age of AI,” universities risk falling victim to their own uncritical acceptance of technology, especially at a time of great financial stress. Industry representatives have strongly encouraged them to move in this direction.
