Liz Kendall has warned that the UK must take the initiative on AI or find itself at the “mercy” of a tech-driven future.
Britain’s technology minister said the country needs to have more control over the industry, stressing that big tech companies are in control of developments with 70% of the world’s artificial intelligence computing power provided by US companies.
Speaking about the UK’s ability to develop its own capabilities, Kendall said: “The choice is not between a world with and a world without AI. It is a choice between a world where we shape our AI future based on our own interests and values, or where we are at its mercy.”
Kendall highlighted the launch of a government AI investment fund this month as evidence of Labor’s support for domestic companies and revealed that the government is drawing up a plan to become more influential in designing and manufacturing the chips that power AI systems.
