On the Broken Silicon podcast, the hosts of Tech YES City and Moore’s Law Is Dead discussed the requirements for the next-generation GeForce RTX 60 series graphics cards. The reviewers agreed that the key goal for developers should be a radical increase in silicon power efficiency, rather than a mechanical increase in thermal design. The flagship model of the previous series, the GeForce RTX 5090, was criticized for excessive power consumption and colossal heat dissipation, creating significant acoustic and thermal discomfort in the room, even with fine-tuning of voltage settings.

The presenters cited a power range of 380W to 450W as a realistic benchmark for next-generation flagship graphics cards. Given the significant design challenges associated with heat dissipation, the panelists did not rule out the possibility that Nvidia would temporarily postpone the simultaneous release of a GeForce RTX 6090. In that case, the company would focus on the immediate launch of the more balanced GeForce RTX 6080, which has moderate power consumption and places less strain on cooling systems.

Experts noted that endlessly increasing power consumption for minimal frame rate gains has…
