The return of Westworld is the perfect time for the flattering age of AI

AAt some point the best science fiction films will be overtaken by reality. Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report predicted personalized advertising and biometric identification. Spike Jonze’s Her guessed correctly that AI would likely emerge as emotionally responsive digital companions that sound like Scarlett Johansson, rather than rampaging killing machines. RoboCop envisioned militarized law enforcement on the streets of America long before the Pentagon decided to get in on the action.

Could Westworld become the latest sci-fi franchise to keep pace with the future? Deadline reports this week that a new film based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film about rich thrill-seekers who head to a techno-amusement park of violence, fantasy and consequence-free debauchery is in the works at Warner Bros., with David Koepp attached to write. This reportedly bypasses the more recent Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy TV reboot, which ran for four seasons between 2016 and 2022.
