NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce RTX 5090 flagship graphics card is rumored to feature the GB202 “Blackwell” GPU, which is said to be a “physically monolithic” chip. This marks a departure from NVIDIA’s previous chiplet design for its HPC and AI GPUs, indicating a shift towards a physically monolithic GPU design for its gaming-focused RTX 50 series GPUs.
The GB202 GPU is expected to power the GeForce RTX 5090 with up to 192 SMs, resulting in a massive 24,567 CUDA cores. Additionally, the RTX 5090 is rumored to come equipped with 32GB of next-generation GDDR7 memory for improved performance.
On the other hand, NVIDIA’s GB203 “Blackwell” GPU, which is anticipated to feature a similar number of CUDA cores as the AD103 “Ada Lovelace” GPU found in the RTX 4080, is expected to offer performance enhancements compared to its predecessor. The GDDR7 memory speeds from Samsung could reach 28 Gbps and 32 Gbps, with the faster 32Gbps variant likely to be featured in the RTX 5090.
The GeForce RTX 5090 is projected to deliver 50-70% better performance than the RTX 4090, particularly in high-end 4K gaming scenarios. With advancements in ray tracing performance and the introduction of DLSS 4 technology exclusive to the new Blackwell-based GPUs, the RTX 5090 promises to offer enhanced gaming experiences, especially in terms of ray tracing and image quality.
In terms of energy efficiency, the upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs are expected to provide significantly better performance per watt compared to the current RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 SUPER models, indicating a focus on improving power consumption and efficiency.
Overall, NVIDIA’s next-generation GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs are set to raise the bar in terms of performance, particularly in 4K gaming and ray tracing capabilities, while also delivering improved energy efficiency. With advancements in GPU architecture, memory technology, and AI-powered features like DLSS 4, NVIDIA is poised to offer gamers a compelling and high-performance gaming experience with its upcoming flagship graphics cards.
