The year 2025, which has just ended, began with a chill – what has our electorate done? – and, from my perspective, ended with a hollow TS Eliot-style whimper. But as the brand new “Constellation Ball” sparkled its 5,280 Waterford crystals over Times Square, as the six-ton, 12.5-foot-diameter gem star made its iconic descent at midnight to usher in 2026, even I, in all my miserliness, had to admit that I felt at least a hint of what the annual celebration’s organizers called “the spirit of the ball’s eternal positivity.”
Of course, I couldn’t quite agree with the opinion of Michael Phillips, the head of the company that owns and operates the globe-topped One Times Square building, that it represented “coherence, wholeness and the cyclical nature of tradition” and celebrated “the…”
