PParents are constantly asked to limit their children’s screen time. But when it comes to figuring out which movies or TV shows are best for a developing mind, The guidelines are largely uniform. A relatively slow-paced show like Bluey offers a very different viewing experience than a fast-paced action series like PAW Patrol, yet both are generally considered suitable for young children.
This challenge is growing as the type of content children are exposed to evolves. “Today’s young viewers are increasingly engaging with short, fast-paced and highly engaging content, often created by stitching together and rearranging existing episodic content into quickly digestible snippets or compilations,” said Prof Tim Smith, Director of the Nerve Lab at the University of the Arts London. “This development is not only changing the way content is produced and distributed, but can also impact children’s attention, understanding and emotional response.”
