The five male “demigods” of AI need our vigilance

Never before has the power to determine the future of everyone on the planet been so concentrated in the hands of a select few.

There are five “demigods” of AI The Economist described them this week, who have unprecedented power over global markets, the global workforce and global security.

These five are all male and each have their own interests, shareholders, agendas and egos. These include xAI CEO Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and the lesser-known Google DeepMind CEO Sir Demis Hassabis.

Expand the list to the next ten, twenty, or fifty most powerful people who control the most consequential technology of our time, and you’ll find that they are almost entirely men.

I would like to highlight this concentration of power in the hands of a few self-interested people today on the occasion of International Girls in ICT Day.
