The federal Chief AI Officer roles will be transferred to existing APS employees

A government mandate to appoint chief AI officers by July next year is likely to be met by integrating the responsibilities into an existing leadership role, rather than by hiring standalone CAIOs.

iTnews contacted 30 key federal departments and agencies to obtain some preliminary guidance on their plans to comply with Public Service Minister Senator Katy Gallagher’s directive to appoint the officers.

Gallagher, whose other main portfolio responsibility is finance minister, made the announcement last month at the launch of the federal government’s whole-of-government AI plan.
