In the hours after a fatal shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis, a familiar and dangerous pattern resurfaced online: AI-generated images that purportedly “reveal” information that no camera ever recorded. Social media users circulated synthetic portraits purporting to show the gunman’s unmasked face, presenting them as visual evidence rather than what they actually were – fabricated guesses generated by generative systems.

The images did not enhance hidden details or restore lost footage. They invented content.
