Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD) is backing a massive new artificial intelligence infrastructure project in Ohio that will give OpenAI access to around 8 gigawatts of computing capacity.
The PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County will be developed, owned and operated by SoftBank-backed SB Energy, with OpenAI leasing the facilities under a 20-year agreement. The project will be built partly on land associated with the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant.
Nvidia will provide credit support for the land, power and building infrastructure needed for the initial 4.25-gigawatt phase and will have the option to support the remaining 3.75 gigawatts. It will also be the exclusive provider of AI computing infrastructure for the campus, using its DSX AI factory platform, including GPUs, CPUs and networking technology.
The chipmaker is also investing US$1.5 billion in SB Energy, joining SoftBank and OpenAI as investors in the infrastructure developer.
Construction is expected to take place in stages, with the first 800 megawatts of capacity scheduled to become available in 2028. OpenAI estimates the development could create 35,000 construction jobs through 2032 and support about 2,500 permanent operating positions.
SB Energy and SoftBank also plan to develop at least 10 gigawatts of new energy…
