The Sydney Morning Herald has removed an opinion piece defending the use of artificial intelligence in universities after it emerged the author used AI to write it.
Cath Ellis is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Quality and Integrity at Western Sydney University and was featured on the newspaper’s website speaking out against concerns that generative AI would diminish the value of higher education.
Sunday’s column was a response to an earlier opinion piece by Macquarie University academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert.
In this article, published under the same imprint, Dr. Moore-Gilbert accused Australian universities of committing “widespread fraud on an industrial scale” and said a “real-time completion experiment of (chat)GPT” would soon take place in workplaces.
In Professor Ellis’ rebuttal, she wrote that she had recently spent time “at the heart of what generative AI is doing for higher education” and that universities have been working to adapt to the technology.
