Patients are asked if they would like to know how artificial intelligence (AI) is used to analyze hospital X-rays.

Dr. Maya Jafari, from James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, and her team have developed an online survey asking people across the UK their views on the issue.

She said there was confusion about how much patients wanted to know about the use of AI, even though many departments were already using the technology.

Dr. Jafari said: “I think the results of our surveys will help the NHS use AI safely, ethically and responsibly.”

AI is currently being used to analyze between 60 and 100 chest X-rays that her department performs daily.

The software flags the scans that indicate potentially serious problems and helps doctors prioritize further testing, Dr. Jafari.

“That puts it at the top of our list,” she said.

However, she said a medical professional always looked at each chest X-ray and the AI ​​system was a “second pair of eyes.”
