Elon Musk’s trial against Sam Altman and OpenAI began with opening statements on Tuesday as lawyers for the two tech moguls tried to convince a California jury of their client’s version of the AI company’s history. The trial is expected to include testimony from both billionaires as well as some of the tech industry’s most influential executives.
Musk argues that Altman, OpenAI and its president Greg Brockman broke a fundamental agreement to improve humanity when the nonprofit transitioned to a for-profit structure. Musk, who left OpenAI in 2018 after co-founding it with Altman and Brockman three years earlier, also claims that his co-founders unjustly enriched themselves as the company made billions of dollars and grew into the AI giant it is today.
OpenAI rejects all of Musk’s claims, saying his case was “motivated by jealousy” and characterizing him as a bitter co-founder seeking revenge after failing to take full control. OpenAI also has…
