The $500 billion Stargate AI data center project announced by US President Donald Trump in January 2025 is reportedly running into serious trouble.

More than a year after the announcement, the joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle and Softbank has not hired any staff and is not actively building data centers. The information reportsciting three people involved in the “shelved idea.” The three partners argued about responsibilities and how the collaboration should be structured. Disagreements that came to the surface last summer.

OpenAI then tried to build its own data centers but was unable to obtain funding. Lenders were unwilling to support multi-billion dollar projects by a company with an unproven business model and high losses. Only after reaching this limit did OpenAI return to its Stargate partners Oracle and Softbank. However, this time the partnership is a two-way deal rather than a three-way consortium.
