ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WSBT) — An update on the Microsoft data center planned for Granger and a proposal that would change how its tax dollars are used.
The St. Joseph County Council listened to a plan to bring the site into a special TIF district.
The resolution would expand the existing AM General TIF district to include the Microsoft site and allow the county to borrow up to $4 million.
TIF Tax Increment Financing lets the county freeze current property tax levels, which then capture future growth and spend it only inside the district.
In this case, that money would fund projects like a Douglas Road rail overpass, water and sewer upgrades, road work and park space.
According to St. Joseph County economic development director Bill Schalliol, they could eventually create “buckets,” so some of that TIF revenue could help fund fire territories and schools.
But he also says those negotiations with other entities won’t start until this expanded TIF is approved.
