Supports up to 60 virtual IEDs, enables digital testing before commissioning and can reduce space needs by about 45%.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure has introduced Siprotec V, a virtualized version of the Siprotec 5 protection and control device for digital substations. The solution is intended to support scalable deployment and cybersecurity requirements and can reduce project execution time by up to six months. As electrification and energy demand increase, utilities are working to expand grid capacity while upgrading aging infrastructure, driving interest in greater automation and standardization for substation protection and control.

Scalability, simplification and security are key requirements

Siprotec V reduces dependencies between protection and control software and embedded devices by using a software-defined approach. It supports protection and control applications that can scale within a substation, including centralized operation of up to 60 virtual intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). This can help utilities adjust protection architectures as network needs change and reduce space requirements by about 45%.
