Sen. Ed Markey on Friday sent letters to TikTok US and Oracle is requesting information on whether the joint venture created to maintain TikTok’s operations in the United States adequately addresses national security concerns over Chinese ownership of the app.
In letters sent Friday, Markey claimed that the spinoff agreement fell short of a 2024 law aimed at severing ties between TikTok’s U.S. operations and ByteDance, the app’s Chinese parent company. CNN reported and said it violated the spirit of the law, if not its letter. “President Trump only managed to keep TikTok online by ignoring the law’s central goal and relying on vague, unproven protections to address legitimate national security risks,” Markey wrote in his letter to TikTok US. “Congress and the American people must understand whether and how this deal protects against Chinese influence on TikTok’s content.”
