Self-driving cars have made impressive progress. You can follow lanes, keep your distance and navigate familiar routes with ease. But despite years of development, they still struggle with a critical problem: the rare and dangerous situations that cause the most serious accidents.
These “edge cases” include sharp turns on wet roads, sudden changes in grade or situations in which a vehicle reaches its physical limits in terms of grip and stability. In real-world operations, which often require some degree of shared control between driver and automation, such moments can arise from human error or from automated systems that cannot anticipate rapidly changing conditions.
They are rare, but when they do occur the consequences can be serious. A car may handle a thousand gentle curves perfectly, but fail in a sharp curve taken a little too fast.
