Microsoft has elevated Rust to Tier-1 language status for internal development, putting it alongside C++, C#, and TypeScript as one of the company’s best-supported programming languages.

For reference, Tier-1 here is Microsoft’s internal label, not a Rust Project support tier. For Microsoft teams, this means they no longer have to set up their own development and production tools for Rust. Now, Microsoft offers a clear process that covers everything from writing code to shipping and maintaining it.

This support includes secure builds of the Rust compiler and toolchain, standard development tools, CI and quality workflows, integration with Microsoft platforms, and the security and compliance steps needed for internal software.

So, while Microsoft engineers have already been using Rust for some time, Tier-1 status is important because it turns Rust into a fully supported option rather than something individual teams need to accommodate largely on their own.
