Reckless drivers in Perth’s north will be under greater scrutiny from Monday when two sets of AI security cameras are activated on the Mitchell Freeway.
Two sets of AI cameras will be switched on – a previously announced row near Vincent Street on the southbound Mitchell Freeway on-ramp and a newly unveiled row near Karrinyup Road.
Both sets of cameras monitor southbound traffic toward the city.
The AI machines can focus on the inside of vehicles to detect offenses such as improperly wearing a seatbelt or touching a phone while driving, although fines for these offenses will not be imposed until December.
Anyone caught speeding will be fined from day one, with double offenses also applying over the WA Day long weekend.
There are now four permanently installed AI cameras on Perth’s motorways, and two sets are already in use on the Kwinana Freeway.
Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby said the cameras were part of a strategy to encourage good behavior.
