The Cook government will rake in almost half a billion dollars in special revenue as part of its expanded rollout of AI cameras for road safety.
A new permanent camera to detect seat belt and cell phone violations has been installed on the Mitchell Freeway near Vincent Street in Leederville and will be operational June 1.
There will be a six-month grace period during which drivers will be warned for seat belt and telephone offenses before infringements are issued from December 1.
This is the third permanent speed camera installed on the Kwinana Freeway last year.
Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby said the state expects to generate $440 million in additional fines revenue from the cameras over the next four years.
“We have seen the number of crimes drop dramatically,” he said.
“With the introduction of this technology, we are still seeing an increase in sales.
