GRANGER, IN – Residents packed a community meeting on Monday, August 24, to learn and ask questions about a proposed tax increment financing (TIF) district expansion tied to a Microsoft data center.
The meeting was hosted by Jamie O’Brien, a Republican candidate running for St. Joseph County Council. Some council members also attended, but the meeting was not an official county meeting or public hearing.
Residents said they wanted to understand what the TIF district expansion could mean for Granger. According to concerned resident Christopher Huff, many meeting attendees left still wanting answers.
“There are so many unanswered questions, they don’t even know what questions to ask,” Huff said.
How the TIF district works
Under the proposal, Microsoft would pay millions of dollars in property taxes. That money would not go across the county. Instead, it would stay inside the TIF district, funding projects such as roads.
Residents said where the money would go is not guaranteed.
