Plans are underway to build the country’s largest data center in Western Australia’s remote north to support large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) training, including systems such as ChatGPT.
The Meridien project, powered by wind, solar and natural gas, would deliver about 240 megawatts of IT capacity and cost billions of dollars.
The “AI factory” would be built in phases on Karajarri land south of Broome in the Kimberley, 2,000 kilometers north of Perth, and is scheduled to open in 2032.

Gingerah Energy is the joint venture behind the project and managing director Jop van Hattum said the project will build on the original project 240 megawatts of IT power.
