Comet, the AI web browser from OpenAI competitor Perplexity, is now available on Android following its previous launch on Windows and macOS. Just like its desktop counterpart, the Android version of Comet uses Perplexity’s search engine by default, and it also includes a built-in AI assistant and ad blocker. But that’s not all.
“Building an AI-first browser has required deliberate work for each OS and every form factor. We didn’t want to just force a desktop experience onto mobile. Instead, Perplexity has redesigned the mobile web browser for the new age of the internet,” the AI startup said in the announcement yesterday.
The AI assistant integrated into Comet can synthesize information coming from various tabs, answer questions, research information, and also act as a personal shopping assistant. The Voice Mode in the main Perplexity mobile app is also available in Comet, allowing users to chat with their tabs.
It’s quite surprising to see Comet launch first on Android instead of iOS, as most big new apps usually give Apple’s platforms priority. That recently happened with Sora, OpenAI’s video generation app that launched on Android in select markets in November, nearly two months after its iOS release.
While Perplexity didn’t mention yesterday whether an iOS version of Comet was coming soon, the company says on its website that “more platforms will arrive soon.” Google,…
