If you thought that ChatGPT was the first AI to attempt incorporating advertisements in its responses, you are mistaken. Before that, there was Perplexity.
It began integrating advertisements in 2024, but it has decided to discontinue this practice because apparently sponsored ads CAN indeed harm credibility.
Why Perplexity will stop displaying advertisements
Although ever since it started to test advertisements, Perplexity maintained that they would not influence the responses generated by its artificial intelligence. However, the company’s executives have acknowledged that perception matters, as users might believe that when they receive a response containing a sponsored advertisement, it may not be the best possible answer and might prompt them to seek information from alternative sources.
This is, without question, a bold decision on their part. As we learned a few months ago, Perplexity already receives 780 million requests per month, which represented a significant showcase for brands advertising on the platform. Should they remain advertisement-free, companies will only be able to achieve this level of visibility organically. This is becoming increasingly challenging considering the vast amount of information now accessible. Standing out is the difficult part, but it also highlights the continued importance of a technique that many believed would become obsolete with the arrival of AI: SEO (and, of course, quality content).
All of this is occurring…
