Perplexity’s Portable Computer brings agentic AI processing to local hardware, promising greater privacy and control but currently requiring high-end Nvidia systems and Linux.
Perplexity has just launched Portable Computer, a new AI tool designed to run directly on a user’s machine without relying on cloud computing. This could offer faster performance and greater privacy, as data can remain on the device unless the user chooses otherwise. For now, Portable Computer works only on Linux and requires high-end hardware, including a compatible Nvidia GPU.
Windows support is expected to arrive in September, while the goal of the system is to reduce cloud computing costs and keep user information secure by handling tasks locally. With the launch, Perplexity’s agentic computer platform is coming to Nvidia DGX Spark and other Linux machines with compatible Nvidia graphics cards.
The new tool could appeal to users who want the convenience of an AI agent without automatically sending everything it accesses to a cloud provider.
More Than Locally Installed Chatbots
While users can already download open models onto their PCs, the bigger challenge is turning these models into AI agents that can work with files, use tools and complete multi-step tasks.
