Perplexity has introduced a new feature called Computer that enables multiple artificial intelligence models to collaborate within a single workflow. The announcement was made by chief executive Aravind Srinivas, who stated that the system dynamically taps different frontier models depending on the task at hand. The feature is available to Perplexity Max subscribers from today and is expected to roll out to Enterprise Max users shortly.
Despite its name, Computer is not a hardware product. It is an orchestration layer designed to coordinate various AI models behind the scenes.
Perplexity AI Computer has been built as a model orchestration system. Rather than relying on a single large language model to manage everything from research to recall, the system routes subtasks to specialist engines better suited to each requirement.
At its core is Opus 4.6, which functions as the primary reasoning engine. When a task requires specific capabilities, the system hands it off accordingly. For deeper research, it uses Gemini from Google, which can create sub-agents to break down complex queries. For faster, lightweight responses, it calls on Grok from xAI. When long-context recall or broad searches are required, it deploys ChatGPT 5.2 from OpenAI.
The underlying philosophy is that instead of stretching one system across every possible use case, the right model should be applied to each component of a workflow.
