Parents criticize school’s “weak” response after 21 girls were caught up in a deepfake scandal

Tasmania’s education minister has referred a parent’s complaint about how a Hobart school handled an AI pornography deepfake incident to a regulator for consideration.

According to Tasmania Police, the images of several girls at Friends’ School – the world’s largest Quaker school – were used to create deepfake pornography material.

The parents of two of the children said police told them 21 victims had been identified.

A deepfake is an image or video in which a real person’s face or body has been edited using AI software to create a false representation.

Five male students have now left the school, but the victims’ parents say their daughters “didn’t know where to turn” for support.

A mother told the ABC she first became aware of the incident in early March through “chatter” from her daughter.
