Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, suggested online a few years ago that Homo Sapiens would be the first species “to design their own offspring.” In its best-case scenario, the “merge” between humans and artificial intelligence will occur sometime over the next 50 years. The alternative, in which we remain just humans and the machines go their own way, is more threatening. “If two different species want the same thing and only one can have it — in this case, to be the dominant species on the planet and beyond — they will have a conflict,” he wrote.
