The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a number of major changes to the Oscars on Friday, including a new policy allowing multiple nominations for a single actor in a category and banning acting and screenwriting awards for work done by AI.
Under new bylaws issued by the group’s board of governors, only performances “demonstrably performed by people with their consent” will be eligible for the acting Oscar, while only screenplays written by people can be considered for a screenplay award.
The clearer policy appears to address eligibility issues raised by the posthumous completion of a performance by Val Kilmer, who died in 2025, using AI. The Academy also reserves the right to request further information about the use of AI in a film.
