Oracle announced today that they will reduce the frequency of software updates for Solaris 11.4 and their ZFS Storage Appliance software.

Currently, Oracle ships a new SRU for Oracle Solaris 11.4 and ZFS Storage Appliance every month for three releases per quarter. However, going forward they will only release two scheduled updates per quarter.

Oracle will align its Solaris Critical Patch Update microrelease with Oracle’s quarterly security release cycle and then release a support repository update approximately six weeks later for all new features and enhancements. The latter is effectively a feature release for all features yet to be added to Solaris 11.4.

In the notice Because of this change, they believe that cadence will simplify lifecycle management and, according to statistics, many of their customers are already applying updates only twice per quarter.
