Artificial intelligence chips are being upgraded faster than data centers can be built, a market reality that poses a material risk to AI trading oracle debt-driven expansion.
OpenAI no longer plans to expand its partnership with Oracle in Abilene, Texas, where the Stargate data center is located, because it wants clusters with newer generations of Nvidia GPUs, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The current Abilene location is expected to use Nvidia’s Blackwell processors, and power is not expected to be available for another year. By then, OpenAI hopes to have expanded access to Nvidia’s next-generation chips in larger clusters elsewhere, said the person, who asked not to be identified for confidentiality reasons.
