Selling AI gear has made Nvidia Corp. (NVDA, Financials) rich. It may be investing more in a company building the next big AI platform. Nvidia is apparently in talks to invest in Perplexity for almost $30 billion, according to The Information.
The number alone is astounding. It would value the AI search startup over 50% higher than its previous financing round a year earlier. There’s growth behind that jump.
Perplexity’s annualized revenue is now above $750 million, up from $250 million at the start of the year. Perplexity Computer, its cloud-based AI agent that automates computer work, has contributed to growth. The firm and Nvidia are connected.
As an investor, Perplexity pledged to deploy Nvidia’s Vera CPUs for AI-agent workloads in July. This makes the investment more intriguing than a conventional venture gamble. Nvidia is investing in firms that could leverage its processing infrastructure to support its chip business.
Investors know the flywheel: Nvidia backs fast-growing AI businesses, which expand and demand more Nvidia technology. Negotiations are preliminary, therefore an agreement is not certain. But the overall picture is becoming clearer. AI is no longer Nvidia’s only focus. It invests more in enterprises defining the future.
