Nvidia’s new VRAM compression trick just gave it a reason to keep selling 8GB GPUs

For as long as modern rendering has existed, textures have been the biggest VRAM hog in the room. You can optimize geometry, tweak lighting, and scale resolution, sure, but those high-resolution materials wrapped around every surface still pile on memory usage like nothing else.

That’s the problem that Nvidia seems to have set out to tackle at GTC 2026, with its Neural Texture Compression tech. Nvidia’s NTC trickery rethinks how textures are stored and reconstructed in-game, and if it works the way early demos suggest, then it could fundamentally change how we think about VRAM requirements.
