Nvidia Corp. (NVDA, Financials) is facing a huge delivery gap as big Chinese technology businesses are likely to get only a tiny fraction of their orders for advanced chips over the next several months.
Chinese artificial intelligence developers including Alibaba, Tencent and ByteDance have together bought almost 6 million RTX Pro 5500 processors, a report said, citing individuals familiar with the matter.
But the firms are only expecting deliveries of tens of thousands of chips over the next four months, or around 1% of the claimed order total.
The deficit comes as Nvidia is struggling to ramp up manufacturing fast enough to fulfill demand for powerful AI computer technology.
Reported orders indicate there’s still strong demand among Chinese cloud providers and AI companies, even if access to sophisticated American semiconductor technology is a delicate subject.
While robust demand is a positive for Nvidia’s long-term revenue prospect, limiting deliveries might delay revenue recognition and cause uncertainty around the timing of fulfillment of outstanding orders.
The article did not confirm a supply timeline for the rest of the chips, or the amount of the possible order value that Nvidia expects to recognize.
The next driver is if Nvidia can increase production and provide clarity on delivery timetables to its Chinese clients.
