NVIDIA’s latest frame generation technologies continue to make their way onto older RTX GPUs thanks to the modding community. This time, developer Adeline released NVSmooth30, an experimental compatibility mod that enables NVIDIA Smooth Motion on GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics cards, which the feature officially doesn’t support.
Introduced with the RTX 50 Series and subsequently expanded to RTX 40 Series GPUs, Smooth Motion is NVIDIA’s driver-level AI frame generation solution. Unlike DLSS Frame Generation, it does not require a game to integrate NVIDIA’s SDK, allowing users to generate one additional frame for each rendered one in compatible titles that lack native frame generation support.
NVSmooth30 works by modifying NVIDIA’s NvPresent64.dll runtime behavior, bypassing the GPU architecture and capability checks that prevent Smooth Motion from initializing on Ampere hardware. The mod also intercepts the CUDA module-loading process, retargeting compatible Ada Lovelace (SM89) GPU code to Ampere (SM86). According to Adeline, the implementation does not redistribute NVIDIA’s proprietary binaries and instead uses the NvPresent64.dll version installed with the user’s…
