An Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 has been shown running a macOS desktop and accepting Metal workloads through an unofficial driver project. The proof of concept is notable, but the phrase “can now run” applies to a developer demonstration rather than a supported package ready for Intel Mac owners.

In the developer’s RTX 5060 update, macOS identifies the board as an 8GB Metal device. The plug-in translates Metal to Vulkan and converts AIR shaders to SPIR-V so applications can submit work without native Nvidia Metal support.

A later test showed Finder, Dock, Safari video and other desktop elements composited through the card. Those results establish that the experiment has moved beyond detection, but they do not provide a general gaming benchmark or prove correct rendering in every Metal application.

Games remain the harder claim

Metal games depend on far more than basic shader execution. Driver scheduling, memory management, synchronization, texture formats and game-specific behavior all affect whether a title launches and performs correctly. No verified compatibility list is available.

The Mac Observer has explained how Metal support affects Mac software. This project attempts to supply that missing layer for modern Nvidia…
