Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang is drawing a sharper line around AI safety, arguing that companies should not deploy systems they cannot reliably control and that labs should shut down entirely if their experiments pose unacceptable risks. The stance matters for Nvidia investors because tighter safety standards could raise development costs across the AI industry, but they may also strengthen demand for more controlled, enterprise-grade infrastructure rather than slowing AI investment altogether.

In an interview with New York Times podcast host Ezra Klein released Wednesday, Huang compared AI deployment to putting a self-driving car on public roads before it meets safety requirements.

If we’re going to build a car, a self-driving car, and we have no idea how to align them to the safety standards what’s the answer? Don’t ship it, Huang said.

He went further when discussing experiments that cannot be contained.

If you say there is no way to contain our experiments, our AI is going to get out and damage the world we have to shut the labs because the cost to humanity the damage is too great.

At the same time, Huang rejected calls for broad regulatory exemptions as AI companies grow from research labs into major commercial businesses.
