NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, praised Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system (FSD) as the most advanced on the market, powered by Nvidia chips. Huang emphasized Tesla’s revolutionary approach to autonomous driving, specifically highlighting Tesla’s fully self-driving version 12 as an end-to-end generative model that learns from immersive videos to predict paths and drive the car. Tesla’s latest FSD, version 12, is currently in beta mode and has accumulated over 1.3 billion miles since its debut in March 2021. Despite its advancements, FSD is still considered a Level 2 autonomous system, requiring supervised use and facing scrutiny from regulators regarding its capabilities.
Nvidia reported automotive revenue of $329 million in the first quarter, a small portion of its overall data center business revenue of $22.6 billion. Huang expressed his hope that all cars will eventually have some level of autonomous capability, requiring significant computing power to process large amounts of data. In addition to Tesla, Nvidia’s automotive customers include prominent brands like Mercedes, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, Hyundai, as well as Chinese electric vehicle startups BYD and NIO. Wall Street analysts are optimistic about Nvidia’s automotive business, with JPMorgan raising its price target for the company based on projected growth in auto revenue over the next few years.
