NVIDIA’s latest App update reportedly introduces a new way to prioritize GPU resources between foreground and background applications, although its availability remains something of a mystery

NVIDIA appears to have quietly introduced a rather interesting feature to its NVIDIA App, allowing users to adjust how their graphics card prioritizes foreground and background workloads. However, the new functionality hasn’t been officially announced, and early reports suggest that it isn’t available to everyone, even with the latest software installed.

As spotted by Reddit user Warkratos, NVIDIA App version 11.0.9.585 seemingly introduces a new GPU App Prioritization setting, accessible through System → Advanced.

According to the user, the default configuration assigns an 80/20 priority distribution between foreground and background applications, respectively. Switching to the Prioritize Foreground option changes this distribution to 90/10, while a custom configuration reportedly allows users to go as far as 95/5.

Essentially, this could give users additional control over how their GPU handles multiple competing workloads, potentially prioritizing their games over GPU-intensive background processes.

For example, someone running a local AI model, GPU-accelerated rendering application, or another compute-heavy task in the background while gaming could theoretically use this functionality to favor the foreground game, potentially…
