Nissan turnaround plan pins hopes on “AI-defined vehicles”

Nissan has announced it will add autonomous driving features to the vast majority of its cars and cut a fifth of its models in the final phase of the Japanese car maker’s lengthy turnaround effort.

Nissan Chief Executive Officer Ivan Espinosa said the company is pinning its hopes on “AI-defined vehicles,” with the goal of incorporating autonomous driving technologies into 90% of its vehicles in the future.

The carmaker experienced years of turmoil under a series of bosses. Espinosa took over last year and has embarked on a painful program of seven factory closures and 20,000 job losses to cut costs.

On Tuesday, he announced at an event at Nissan headquarters in Yokohama, Japan, that the company would reduce the number of cars it produces from 56 to 45 models in order to redirect investments into more profitable models.

“Our pressure to perform arises from structural challenges that worsen over time,” Espinosa said. “Our portfolio aged faster than the market, costs rose faster…
