Analysis of the good earnings prospects of the energy sector
The recent rise in 2026 earnings estimates has been significantly stronger compared to 2027 estimates, reflecting expectations that the ongoing rise in oil prices will moderate over time.
As we noted in this space last week, the energy sector currently has a much lower weighting in the S&P 500 index than it did many years ago, both in terms of market capitalization and earnings contribution. But the ever-improving profitability outlook for the energy sector still contributes to the overall favorable trend in headline revisions that we show a little later in this note.
