New security unit to combat “catastrophic” AI-powered bioweapons

The Albanian government has set up a new high-level national security taskforce to combat the potential threat of bioweapons falling into criminal hands, as industry experts warn Australia faces dangerous catastrophic risks from rapid advances in artificial intelligence.

Advanced AI can now train malicious actors to weaponize synthetic nucleic acids and engineer pathogens, punching holes in Australia’s notoriously strict biosecurity regulations, according to dozens of biosecurity and AI industry leaders and academics who have raised their concerns with Agriculture Minister Julie Collins.
