Mysterious US drone nicknamed ‘Manta Ray’ spotted on GOOGLE MAPS briefly before disappearing

A mysterious American weapon prototype known as Manta Ray, a drone with diamond-shaped bodies and wing-shaped fins, was recently captured on Google Maps at the Port Hueneme naval base in California. The detailed satellite image of the unmanned underwater vehicle designed by Northrop Grumman Corporation went viral on the internet but has since been removed.

The Manta Ray is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors for detecting and classifying underwater threats, making it a major breakthrough in underwater drone technology. It is described as an “extra-large glider” that can operate long-duration, long-range missions without the need for human logistics on-site. With extended range, long-term deployment capabilities, and diverse payload capacity, the drone submarine is designed to be modular for easy transport in standard shipping containers.

Despite Google Maps updating its images every one to three years, the quick disappearance of the Manta Ray from the dock at Port Hueneme naval base sparked speculation about deliberate removal. Online users were surprised by the submarine’s strange appearance and sudden replacement by other boats, with some suggesting that the images had been edited. However, there are rumors that the Manta Ray may be deployed in the Black Sea to aid Ukraine’s defense following recent actions against the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

The prototype completed full-scale testing off the coast of Southern California last month, showcasing its capabilities for long-duration underwater missions. DARPA Program Director Dr. Kyle Woerner has been involved in overseeing the development of the Manta Ray prototype alongside the Northrop Grumman team. Despite the submarine’s disappearance from Google Maps, its advanced technology and potential applications for national defense have sparked widespread interest and speculation among online users.
