“Most people don’t enjoy their jobs”: Perplexity CEO says AI layoffs can create opportunities

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has pushed back against growing fears of mass unemployment due to artificial intelligence, arguing that AI-led job losses could instead open doors for entrepreneurship.

Speaking on the All-In podcast recorded at Nvidia’s GTC event, Srinivas said AI-driven layoffs should not be feared but seen as an opportunity to build small businesses. “The reality is most people don’t enjoy their jobs,” he said, adding that AI tools now allow individuals to “start your own mini business.”

He acknowledged that job displacement may occur in the short term but framed it as a transition toward what he called a “glorious future,” where individuals can pursue work they are passionate about. 

AI as a startup enabler

Srinivas said artificial intelligence could make small businesses more efficient by reducing reliance on large teams and heavy funding. He pointed to examples like TurboAI, an AI-powered flashcard and quiz platform built by two college students with less than $300, which now generates $1 million in monthly revenue with just 13 employees.

He also echoed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s view that AI could enable a billion-dollar company run by a single individual, suggesting that such a “one-person unicorn” is most likely to emerge from AI-optimised small businesses.
