The use of artificial intelligence* continues to advance at an astonishing pace.
Farmers around the world have done things more or less the same way for centuries – but agriculture is the latest industry to be transformed by AI, with the introduction of a “cowgorithm*” that is improving efficiency in unexpected ways.
New Zealand-based Halter has equipped cows with “smart collars” that allow farmers to control livestock movement via an app.
In a development that certainly has cattle dogs chasing tail, the solar-powered collars not only record health information like digestion* and fertility cycles*, but also deliver sound and vibration signals directly to the animal.
The herd can be called to milk at the touch of a button and fences are replaced with digitally created boundaries that restrict cattle* to certain parts of a paddock to control land use.
