SOMERS – State Police have attributed a rash of young people illegally entering the abandoned IBM site in Somers to ‘urban exploring,’ a social media trend during which individuals enter vacant buildings to film videos for social media platforms.
The latest incident reported by Somers State Police resulted in the arrests of three Capital District teenagers on charges of criminal trespass.
The trio of 18-year-olds, all residing in Schenectady, were arrested at 12:45 a.m., bringing the number of trespassing arrests at the sprawling facility to more than 30 over the past two months.
State Police described the trespassing as “not only illegal but also posing significant safety risks.”
Authorities have warned that abandoned buildings may hold structural hazards, open shafts and hazardous materials resulting in serious injury or death.
