Microsoft Corp. (MSFT, Financials), the software and cloud giant, could unveil its next-generation Maia 300 AI chip as soon as September as it takes a bigger step toward reducing its dependence on Nvidia.
Microsoft has been developing its own AI silicon for years, but scaling those chips has been the harder part. That may now be changing.
The company is reportedly discussing manufacturing capacity with TSMC for more than 300,000 Maia chips to be delivered in 2027. Microsoft also wants major cloud customers, including Anthropic, to adopt the new hardware.
That makes Maia more than an internal cost-saving project. If customers are willing to run workloads on Microsoft-designed chips, Azure could gain more control over one of the most expensive parts of the AI infrastructure stack.
Nvidia is still the dominant supplier, and replacing its ecosystem will not be easy. But at Microsoft’s scale, even shifting part of its AI workload onto homegrown chips could matter for both costs and margins. The September unveiling will be the next test of how serious that challenge is becoming.
