Microsoft’s LinkedIn cuts 5% of staff, Seattle jobs at risk

LinkedIn, the Microsoft-owned professional social-networking platform, notified hundreds of employees this week that they were out of a job, adding more bad news onto a regional tech labor market that has been shedding positions for well over a year.

The layoffs, first reported by Bloomberg, are expected to hit roughly 5 percent of LinkedIn’s global workforce of more than 17,000. Engineering, product, marketing, and the company’s global business organization are all taking cuts. Several Seattle-area employees confirmed their departures in posts on the platform itself; MyNorthwest reported that the Washington Employment Security Department has not yet filed a WARN notice specifying how many Puget Sound-area workers were affected.

LinkedIn has maintained a Bellevue office on two floors at Lincoln Square North, a space that can hold at least 120 employees, since Microsoft acquired the platform in 2016. The company kept those floors even after Microsoft’s…
